How to Get to Leeward Coast, Oahu

Getting to the Leeward Coast is no problem at all. As you’re already in Hawaii’s main island, there should be no difficulties getting around the island from the airport. In fact, most of the locations in Oahu are within minutes’ drive from the airport.

The island of Oahu is served by the Honolulu International Airport. As such, you don’t need to take an inter-island flight because you’re already in Oahu. The Honolulu International Airport has numerous international carriers and domestic liners, which means you can reach Oahu from almost anywhere, as long as there’s a direct flight offering to Honolulu. This makes it a tad bit easier for you compared to going to other islands as some of those require a local connecting flight.

Going to Leeward Coast

From the airport, it’s just off to the roads. As mentioned earlier, you can drive to anywhere in Oahu from the airport. Your transportation options are the following: you can get a rental car, take the bus, use the trolley system, or ride the taxi. Another option would be a free shuttle, but that would depend on the hotel or resort that you’ll be staying in.

By car

The best option is to get a rental car. Having your own vehicle to get around the island is more convenient and gives you more flexibility in your travel. You can drive yourself to anywhere at any time that you want. The best way to save in your car rental is to include it on the travel package that you’re getting. Depending on the travel agency or airline that you have selected, you can get discounts on these packages which also include accommodations and tours. You can also make your reservations online as some car rental companies offer special discounts for online reservations. Whatever method you choose, you would better enjoy your vacation in Oahu with a car rental.

By bus

The bus system in Oahu is pretty much established with bus lines getting you to most of the attractions in the island. It is also the economical option as fares can cost less than three bucks. The problem with buses is that they follow a schedule, so you might not be as flexible in your travels within the island. But if you’re on a shoestring budget, the bus system would certainly help you save your buck.

Trolley systems are the same as buses, but the trolleys’ routes are not as extensive as buses. But even so, the trolleys will give you access to the major tourist attractions in the island. Aside from that, these trolleys are also affordable, so they present a good option for those who are on a tight budget. And one more thing, you don’t have trolleys anywhere, so these also present a good opportunity to try one.

Taxis are convenient, but they can also be expensive. You also have the issue of availability, since you can’t have a taxi always waiting for you when you get out. And eventually, if you plan to get around the island much, the taxi fares would come out higher than a car rental. So, you should also consider how much you plan to explore and see the various destinations.

To reach the Leeward Coast from the airport, you can either take the Kamehameha Highway or the H1 freeway. Travel time is fairly short; you can reach Leeward Coast in 30 minutes or so. That’s how easy it is to get to the Leeward Coast. Whether you’re coming from abroad or from the mainland, you have several flights available to take you to Honolulu. And from Honolulu, it’s just a matter of getting to the Leeward Coast.
